01 — My Story

The Honest
Journey

I didn't grow up dreaming of being a developer. I didn't even know much about coding until a family member introduced me to Zone 01 Kisumu — a peer-to-peer learning school with no teachers, no lectures, just problem solving.

They had me play a cognitive game. I passed. That opened the door to a one-month intensive called Piscine — one of the hardest selection processes you'll ever face. Long hours, tough challenges, no hand-holding.

I passed that too. And now I'm one of the apprentices at Zone 01 Kisumu, doing my one-year module as a developer — building real things, pushing through real struggles.

My laptop broke mid-project. I lost code I hadn't pushed to GitHub. I started over. That's the job.

Step 1

Discovered Zone 01 Kisumu

Introduced through a family member. Played the cognitive selection game and passed.

Step 2

Survived the Piscine

One month of intensive coding challenges. No teachers. Just peers, problems and persistence.

Step 3

Selected as Apprentice

Made the cut. Now doing my one-year developer module at Zone 01 Kisumu.

Now

Building in public

Writing about my progress, pushing code to GitHub, and building real projects from scratch.

02 — What I Work With

Go (Golang)

Learning to build REST APIs with clean architecture — currently applying this in my first real project..

Writing raw SQL queries, designing tables, running migrations on Neon.tech.

🔐

Auth & JWT

Secure user registration, bcrypt password hashing, JWT token authentication.

Git

Git & GitHub

Version control, pushing projects publicly, writing about the process.

gin

Gin Framework

HTTP routing, middleware, request binding and JSON responses.

Chiro
Marketplace

A team marketplace built by the Flying Tea Squad, adapting the open-source Spree Commerce codebase into a store of our own. It runs a Store API, an admin dashboard and a separate storefront, packaged with Docker and configured for deployment on Render. I contributed to the frontend part of the project

05 — Beyond the Code
✏️

Drawing

Sketching keeps my eye for detail sharp and gives my mind a break from the screen. It shapes how I think about layout and design.

🥾

Hiking

Long trails teach patience and pacing, the same habits that got me through the Piscine and long debugging sessions.
